What Is EMV?

EMV stands for “Europay, MasterCard and Visa”, and it is the global standard for credit and debit card payment processing. EMV cards are debit or credit cards with a chip installed in them, and the chip adds more security to the transaction than a traditional magnetic stripe card. The P.O.S. System (Register) inside the store, and as the credit card readers in the dispensers must be compliant.

When Do I have to Comply?

The P.O.S. System inside the store was required to be upgraded by October 1, 2015. You should be accepting chip cards inside the store now.

The credit card readers and data communication method must be compliant by April 17, 2021.

Although this deadline has been extended due to the Coronavirus, we believe there will be no further extensions.

How Do I Comply?

There are many ways to comply. Dispenser credit card readers can be upgraded/replaced or in some instances, the dispensers should be replaced. The age of the dispensers often indicated which decision should be made. The credit card communication wiring must be upgraded as well. Either compliant wiring must be installed or wireless communication equipment.
